Lesson 15 - Working with files and folders in Java - New API

In the previous lesson, Working with files and folders in Java, we went over the older File class. In the end of the article, we showed the issues the class suffers from. Since Java version 7, developers have come up with a new API. This API includes new classes: Files, Paths and the most important Path interface. In today's lesson we're going to describe all these classes.

The Path Interface

The Path interface simply represents a path in a filesystem. It's good to say that the implementation of this interface depends on the operating system. As in the lesson on File, we'll introduce the methods associated with this interface.

Creating an Instance

Since Path is an interface, we have to instantiate it by a factory method. There are several ways, but two are the most important:

  • Paths.get(String path): Path - an older way to create an instance; since Java version 11, it only delegates to the next method
  • Path.of(String path): Path - since Java version 11; creates a new instance based on a path specified in the parameter
