Lesson 10 - Multithreading in Java - ThreadPool
In the previous lesson, Java Multithreading - Runnable, Callable, Future, Executor, we introduced basic interfaces for parallel programming. Today, we're going to look at their implementations.
ThreadPool
Java threads correspond 1:1 to operating system threads. The operating system also takes care of thread planning. If we keep creating new threads uncontrollably, we can very quickly run into a situation where the application ends up running out of memory. This is because creating a new thread is a relatively "expensive" operation. When a new thread is created, all these items has to be created as well:
- program counter (instruction pointer)
- registry contents
- stack
- planning properties
- and other overhead...
