Lesson 10 - Multithreading in Java - ThreadPool

In the previous lesson, Java Multithreading - Runnable, Callable, Future, Executor, we introduced basic interfaces for parallel programming. Today, we're going to look at their implementations.

ThreadPool

Java threads correspond 1:1 to operating system threads. The operating system also takes care of thread planning. If we keep creating new threads uncontrollably, we can very quickly run into a situation where the application ends up running out of memory. This is because creating a new thread is a relatively "expensive" operation. When a new thread is created, all these items has to be created as well:

  • program counter (instruction pointer)
  • registry contents
  • stack
  • planning properties
  • and other overhead...
